A mixture of thoughts and plurality in life give a break in daily routine, and sometimes it becomes just enough to recognize all that is grand with living. Over exposure to even the best of situations can drain enthusiasm and drive from anyone. That could be the key to really enjoying life. What would I do without me? Without a solid answer to that question, stoicism seems an artificial reality comprising of little more than repression of internal desires. Live on a whim then? Hardly, what becomes important then is life and not a conception of life better or grander in the future or past. Life is just really all about living. Forget about the new kitchen, enjoy your roommates now. When you move out, sans children and life partner, you will have plenty of selfish time to walk around nude and re-arrange the furniture. You might even miss the old roomies.

I really like your decision at the beginning of this last paragraph. Having just talked with my 69 yr-old Dad who, would you guess, has these same kinds of thoughts, as do I, being in yet a different life-stage; I'd echo the advice he gave me. Now,hang on to your seats because this is really original -"Just enjoy today. Appreciate what's good about THIS day and try to love people your best." Sounds a little biblical, a little psycho-therapy, a little hippy, huh? (Well, that's my Dad.) ;) But, considering our alternatives, that advice sat well with me. When/if the day comes for that life-long commitment, or kids for you... I think this outlook can bring you a satisfying future.

Wendy - I'm SO happy you are glad you went and are loving it more than whatever stresses have come with the changes. You could probably tell I was worried for you. Sorry - guess that's just the "mom" in me. This article was a vivid peek into your life! Your "wonder if?" thoughts were very relatable.

I really enjoy hearing about your experiences abroad, Wendy. I think that the humbleness (or is it humility?) that comes from living for a while in a country that isn't your own is an experience not to be missed.

I love this article. I think it's a mindset that should be shared by more Americans. In my limited experiences traveling abroad, I've found that it is impossible to return from a foriegn place unchanged. With every new country experienced you find not only a greater understanding of the world, but of yourself as well. I envy your current position and it's great to see that you're taking the most from it.
